Ingredient Selection and Substitutions
Choosing the right ingredients is essential for optimum taste. Key components include:
- Sweet Potatoes: Fresh sweet potatoes produce a richer taste. Canned sweet potatoes can be substituted for convenience.
- Pineapple: Fresh or canned pineapple works well. If using canned, opt for those without added sugar to control sweetness.
- Sweeteners: Brown sugar adds depth, while maple syrup can be a natural substitute. Adjust sweetness levels according to personal preference.
- Toppings: Traditional marshmallows or pecans can be used. For a healthier option, consider using oats or coconut flakes.

Can You Use Less Sugar in this casserole recipe?
If you prefer side dishes less sweet, you can cut the brown sugar in both the sweet potatoes and the topping in half. So you’d just use ¼ cup in each, for a ½ cup total in the casserole. I love sweet potatoes, so using less sugar lets their flavor shine through more!
Can I use Canned Sweet Potatoes?
Yes, one 29-oz can will yield about 2 cups of mashed sweet potatoes. Canned potatoes are awesome since they’re SO easy to use! No cooking is needed, just drain and mash.
Are yams and sweet potatoes the same thing?
Nope. Yams are usually harder to find in grocery stores and feature a white interior, while sweet potatoes are much easier to find in stores and are filled with orange color inside. You can use the two interchangeably though, so whichever one you have on hand or can find in stores (or in your garden) is fine to use in this recipe.
Can I add coconut to a sweet potato and pineapple casserole?
Coconut can be added either as shredded coconut mixed into the casserole or in the form of coconut milk for the base. This addition enhances the flavor and creaminess. It’s advisable to adjust sugar levels according to personal preference, as coconut can contribute sweetness.
How do you know when sweet potato casserole is done?
The casserole will be finished baking when everything is nicely warmed through and looking toasty. The marshmallows are added at the end and are given a few minutes in the oven to soften, melt, and become a toasted color. Once the marshmallows are to the color you want, the casserole is finished.
