Back to School Pretzels made with chocolate and decorated to look like paper, apples, pencils and a school bus! Super cute treat to get everyone excited for school.
I love making chocolate covered pretzels! My kids and I had such a fun time making these Back to School Pretzels; creating was almost as fun as eating! Make a list of supplies and have fun mixing colors to create what everyone needs the most when school starts again.
Back to School Pretzels
To make them all you’ll need:
- 1 bag square Butter Snap Pretzels
- 1 bag mini Pretzels
- 1 bag stick Pretzels
- The following colors of candy melts- bright white, orange, red, black, blue (although you’ll literally only need 1/2 of 1 blue disc, so you’re welcome to use food coloring + white candy melts if you prefer for this one!)
- 1 bag of M&M candies
How do you make Homemade Chocolate Covered Pretzels?
I adore chocolate covered pretzels and make them often! Here are several tips and tricks I’ve learned over the years.
It’s much easier to understand how each type of pretzel is made if you watch the video I created! (Coming very soon!)
A good rule of thumb to go by when melting chocolate is to GO SLOWLY. This recipe was tested on an 1100 watt microwave. If yours is more, then you’ll need to reduce the time. If it’s less, then you’ll need to add time. I prefer to add time in short increments- 10-15 seconds. I always melt chocolate in a glass or ceramic bowl. They retain heat better, so that your chocolate can finish melting fully once it’s removed from the microwave. Candy melts will retain their shape even after your microwave them. They’ll look glossy and you’ll know their fully melted because if you gently shake your bowl, the shapes will fall apart and it will look smooth and ready to dip pretzels!
Also, I use this incredibly handy Wilton dipping tool when I make chocolate covered pretzels. It’s amazing!
Let chocolate pretzels set at room temperature in order to maintain a smooth finish.
I’ve separated each ingredient list by each pretzel below:
“Paper” Back to School Pretzels
- 15-20 square “butter snap” pretzels
- 3/4 cups bright white candy melts, separated
- 1/2 red candy melt (yes, 1/2 the disc!)
- 1/2 blue candy melt
- Place 3 white candy melts + 1/2 of a red candy melt in 1 ziplock bag. Microwave until soft, about 40 seconds. Press candy around until color is a pale pink. Set aside.
- Place 3 white candy melts + 1/2 of a blue candy melt in 1 ziplock bag. Microwave until soft, about 40 seconds. Press candy around until color is a pale blue. Set aside.
- Microwave remaining bright white candy melts in a small glass/ceramic bowl for 1 minute 20 seconds, until smooth. Dip each pretzel and place on parchment to cool & set.
- Snip a small corner off each ziplock bag. Draw 1 pink vertical line and 3 horizontal blue lines on each pretzel.
- Let cool full to set. Store in an airtight container.
“Apple” Back to School Pretzels
- 3/4 cup red candy melts
- 20 mini pretzels
- 20 green chocolate candies
- Microwave candy melts in a small glass bowl for about 1 minute 20 seconds, until smooth.
- Dip each pretzel fully in chocolate, allowing for some excess on each pretzel so that the 3 holes can be covered.
- Place 1 green candy in the indentation at the top of each pretzel.
- Let cool full to set. Store in an airtight container.
“Pencil” Back to School Pretzels
- 48 stick pretzels
- 1/2 cup orange candy melts
- 5 white candy melts + 1 red candy melt
- 3 orange candy melts + 2 white candy melts
- 8 black candy melts
- 4 white candy melts + 2 black candy melts
- Melt orange candy melts in a small glass bowl for 1 minute 15 seconds. Stir until smooth.
- Dip 3 stick pretzels at a time in the orange chocolate. Turn pretzels to fully coat. Place to cool & set on parchment paper. Make sure pretzels are fully set before proceeding to the next step.
- Melt red + white candy melts in a small glass bowl for 30 seconds. Stir until smooth. Set aside.
- Melt 3 orange candy melts + 2 white candy melts in a small glass bowl for 30 seconds. Stir until smooth. Set aside.
- Place 8 black candy melts in a small baggie. Microwave for 45 seconds. Press gently to soften and push into 1 corner. Snip corner and set aside.
- Place 4 white candy melts + 2 black candy melts in a small ziplock bag. Microwave for 35 seconds. Press gently to soften and mix until it’s a gray color. Push candy into 1 corner. Snip corner and set aside.
- Take orange pretzels and dip 1 end in the pale orange candy and the other end in the pink candy. Place back on parchment. Take the gray candy and color a band at the top of the pink end. Take the baggie with black candy and color a triangle above the pale orange section. This is the pencil lead!
- Let cool full to set. Store in an airtight container.
“School Bus” Back to School Pretzels

- 3/4 cup orange candy melts
- 10 brown chocolate candies
- 10 black candy melts
