SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE WITH MARSHMALLOWS AND APPLES
Sweet Potato Casserole is often made with marshmallows, but this recipe also includes sliced apples. They pair so well with the canned sweet potatoes! You will find that this marshmallow topped sweet potato casserole goes perfectly with everything else at your Thanksgiving dinner. Give it a try this holiday season and you will be pleasantly surprised by just how incredible it tastes. You may even be convinced to eat sweet potato casserole more than once a year!
WHY WE THINK YOU WILL LOVE THIS APPLE SWEET POTATO RECIPE
In case you needed more convincing to give this dish a try, here are a few reasons why we think you should.
- It’s so easy. We start with canned sweet potatoes (yams) and end up with a casserole that is hard to beat. It only takes a few minutes to slice the apples and add the other ingredients.
- It is a comforting dish. As you would expect for any sweet potato casserole, these mashed sweet potatoes with apples are comforting and tasty. A perfect experience for your meal. The leftovers taste great the next day too if you are lucky enough to have some saved for later.
- You can make this in advance. Just prepare the recipe in the dish before covering and placing into the fridge for up to a day in advance. When you are ready to bake, allow the casserole to sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes as the oven preheats before baking and adding marshmallows as directed.
Ingredients in Apple Sweet Potato Casserole with Marshmallows
Apples – You will need two large apples, peeled and sliced. The best varieties of apples for baking are Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Fuji or Pink Ladies. Basically any crisp, tart apple will work great!
Pecans – Chopped pecans add an amazing crunch to the recipe, and the flavor is delicious too!
Brown sugar – Just a half cup of brown sugar adds a little bit of sweetness and richness to the casserole. You can reduce the amount a little bit if you’d like.
Cinnamon – The recipe calls for just a half teaspoon of cinnamon, but I actually really love to add a little bit of extra. Totally up to you!
Sweet potatoes – The recipe calls for two (15 oz) cans of sweet potatoes. Make sure to drain them first. Or you can even use one 29 ounce can instead. Often the cans will say “Yams”, but they are actually sweet potatoes! According to the recipe, you can just add them right after draining but you can also chop them up a little bit if you prefer.
Butter – You will need one stick of butter to slice up in small pieces and place all over the top of the casserole before baking.
Marshmallows – Don’t leave the mini marshmallows off the top. This is the best part of the whole dish! Although you can definitely leave them off and the casserole will still be pretty sweet and delicious.

CAN YOU USE LESS SUGAR?
If you prefer side dishes less sweet, you can cut the brown sugar in half! So you’d just use 1/4 cup in the casserole. And of course, you could reduce the amount of marshmallows too or even leave them off completely. Sweet potatoes are naturally sweet, and so are the apples, so using less sugar may not even be noticeable!
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN APPLE SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE WITH MARSHMALLOWS IS DONE?
The casserole will be finished baking when everything is nicely warmed through and looking toasty. The marshmallows are added at the end and are given a few minutes in the oven to soften, melt, and become a toasted color. Once the marshmallows are to the color you want, the casserole is finished.
ARE YAMS AND SWEET POTATOES THE SAME THING?
Nope. Yams are usually harder to find in grocery stores and feature a white interior, while sweet potatoes are much easier to find in stores and are filled with orange color inside. Actual yams and sweet potatoes taste pretty differently. The tricky part is that most of the canned “yams” at the grocery store are actually sweet potatoes. Are you confused yet? Me too! Basically if you are using fresh yams vs. fresh sweet potatoes, it makes a difference. This recipe calls for canned sweet potatoes which are usually called yams – so any type of canned yams or sweet potatoes will work just fine!
