Halloween Popcorn is made with a sweet, buttery candy coating and then tossed with Halloween candy. It’s the perfect festive treat for everyone to enjoy!
If your kids are anything like mine, they are always begging for popcorn when they watch a movie. It’s fun to have different versions to mix things up! There’s no better treat to munch on while snuggled under a blanket watching a movie than this perfect salty/sweet combo!
Festive Halloween Dessert
We have a lot of popcorn recipes on this site, which goes to show how much we love popcorn! This Halloween snack mix is one of our favorite festive variations, and it’s made using Nellie’s “Better Than Caramel Popcorn” recipe.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- It’s perfectly simple. Anyone can toss this popcorn recipe together; we love how simple and sweet it is. The sweet, buttery candy that coats the popcorn and the candy pieces add nice diversity in every handful.
- You can add whatever candies you want! Add in whatever Halloween treats you’d like- candy corn popcorn was amazing, as was the M&M’s. The kids loved the gummy worms, of course!
- You can serve it on movie night or a party. Create a large Halloween popcorn bowl full of this festive mix and watch how fast it disappears.
Spooky Popcorn Ingredients
Popcorn: You need 2 packages of microwave popcorn or ⅓ cup of un-popped kernels. Once popped, this will be about 9 cups of popcorn.
Butter: Use ½ cup of butter (one stick) for rich, buttery popcorn.
Sugar: For the candy coating, you will need 1 cup of granulated sugar.
Heavy cream: ⅓ cup of heavy whipping cream is needed to make the candy coating perfect.
Halloween candy: You will want a nice variety of Halloween themed candy. About 3-4 different kinds is great and should be plenty. Keep in mind that chocolate candies will melt on the warm popcorn.
How long is candy popcorn good for?
This Halloween popcorn mix is good for several days if kept stored in an airtight container at room temperature. While we truly believe it tastes best when freshest, it’s not bad the following day or two days later. Feel free to savor the flavor and enjoy a little bit daily until it runs out.

HALLOWEEN POPCORN RECIPE
Ingredients
- 2 packages microwave popcorn, popped (or 1/3 cup un-popped kernels)
- ½ cup butter
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ⅓ cup heavy whipping cream
- 3-4 different types of Halloween themed candy
Instructions
- Pop your popcorn and remove any un-popped kernels. Pour the popcorn in a large bowl and set aside.
- Combine the butter, sugar and whipping cream in a medium saucepan. Bring mixture to a boil over medium heat and boil for about 5 minutes, stirring often.
- Pour the mixture over the popcorn and stir well to combine to coat all the kernels. Add in Halloween candy- our favorites were candy corn and mini M&M's- and stir to combine. It's best when served immediately.
- **I've also made this in the microwave. Combine butter, sugar & whipping cream in a large glass bowl. Microwave for 2.5 minutes, stir, then for an additional 2 minutes. Pour over popcorn, add candy.

Can I use margarine instead of butter?
You could note that butter has a much better consistency and flavor with this popcorn, so I think it would work best. You can use salted or unsalted butter, depending on what you already have on hand.
What kinds of candy go well in this popcorn mix recipe?
We’ve tried this recipe with everything from gummy worms and M&M’s, to hot tamales and milk duds, and the results are always tasty. Any type of small candy like junior mints or Reese’s pieces would also be good so just pick your favorites and let the popcorn cool down before adding any chocolate candies, they will melt!

Hi Jessica:
I found your recipe on Pinterest and cannot wait to make it for the kids. I do have one question. My niece and nephew are allergic to dairy. I am going to use vegan butter. Do you have any suggestions for a substitute I can use in place of the heavy whipping cream?
Jessica says
I’m not vegan so I don’t do a lot of experimenting with those restrictions, but I did find this: http://www.godairyfree.org/dairy-substitutes/how-to-substitute-cream Hope it helps!!
