Step by step on how to make Texas Sheet Cake
Prep
Preheat your oven to 375°F and then spray a 15×10″ baking sheet lightly with nonstick spray and set it aside.
Cake batter
In a large saucepan, bring the water and butter just to a boil. Remove it from the heat and whisk in the flour, sugar, eggs, sour cream, both extracts, salt, and baking soda, until smooth.
Bake
Transfer the batter to the prepared pan, place in the preheated oven and bake for 20-22 minutes, until the cake is golden brown. Set it on a rack to cool. While cake is baking, you can make the icing and toast the walnuts.
Icing
Combine the butter and milk in a medium saucepan, bring it to a boil, then remove from heat. Whisk in powdered sugar and almond extract.
Toast walnuts
Pour the walnuts in a medium sized skillet and cook over medium heat. Increase the heat slightly, stirring the nuts often, until they become fragrant and slightly darker, about 5-7 minutes. Stir the walnuts into the icing.

Top cake
Pour the walnuts and icing over the warm cake and let it cool to set. Cut the cake into squares, serve, and enjoy!

How long is this white sheet cake good for & how do you store it?
White Texas Sheet Cake can be stored at room temperature for up to 3days when covered. For longer storage, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and aluminum foil, then freeze for up to three months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before serving.
What techniques can be used to ensure a moist Texas Sheet Cake?
To maintain moisture, avoid overmixing the batter. Incorporating the sour cream aids in achieving a tender texture. Additionally, baking the cake until just done and allowing it to cool completely before icing can help retain its moisture.

Can buttermilk be used in this recipe and what are the effects?
Buttermilk can replace sour cream in the recipe. It too contributes to the cake’s moisture. The acidity in buttermilk also reacts with the baking soda, potentially enhancing the cake’s rise.
