I grew up in California and one of the things I miss the most is the freshly baked sourdough bread. Seriously. Sure the ocean is great and you know, that moderate temperature is pretty fun too, but believe me when I say, I MISS THE BREAD. Why is it SO good out there?? I have no idea, but it is.
Years ago I made a discovery here in my land-locked state: our local Kroger grocery store bakes fresh California Goldminer Sourdough Bread on a daily basis. Be still my sourdough bread loving heart! I’ve been hooked since then and now it’s one of our regular purchases. You open the package and can immediately understand why this bread is different- it smells incredible and it’s got the perfect chewy texture.
California Goldminer Sourdough Bread can be found in the bakery section of your grocery store. Our Kroger store has several varieties but my favorite is the traditional sourdough loaf. It comes sliced, so it’s perfect for toast or sandwiches, but I use it for all sorts of recipes. Today I’d like to share a classic french toast with a few little twists that will make you fall in love with breakfast all over again!
Strawberries & Cream French Toast
yields 6 slices french toast, enough for 3-4 people
- 1 loaf California Goldminer Sourdough Bread
- 2 eggs
- 2/3 cup milk (any variety!)
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2 TBSP flour
- 2 cups heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp almond extract
- 1-2 cups fresh strawberries, sliced & sprinkled with 2 TBSP granulated sugar
Heat skillet to medium heat, about 275 degrees F.
Mix together the heavy whipping cream, 1/4 cup granulated sugar and almond extract until soft peaks form, about 4-5 minutes. Set aside.
Whisk together the eggs, milk, cinnamon, vanilla and flour. Dip slices of bread in milk mixture, then arrange on hot skillet. Flip bread after about 3 minutes and cook for an additional 2 minutes on the other side.
Top with a rounded dollop of sweetened cream and sliced strawberries.
What should you do with the rest of the loaf??
Our family has no problems with leftovers when it comes to California Goldminer Sourdough Bread! We love it made into grilled cheese, made into BLT sandwiches, or even toasted and spread with lots of butter and homemade jam. I always buy 2 loaves because it disappears quickly!
Here’s a fun little recipe for any bread you might have remaining though…
Garlic Bread Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
- 4 TBSP butter, softened
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp dried parsley
- dash of salt
- slices of California Goldminer Sourdough Bread
- slices of cheddar & Monterey Jack cheese
In a small bowl, mix the butter, garlic powder, parsley and salt. Lay bread slices out on a surface and spread butter on the tops of the slices.
Place the bread butter side down on the hot skillet. Top bread with 1 slice of each variety of cheese. Finally, top with another piece of bread, butter side up.
Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, until golden brown and the cheese has melted.
