4th of July Cookie ingredients
-Milano cookies: You will need 1 package of Chocolate Milano cookies for the easy base of this holiday treat.
-Red candy melts: Using 1/3 cup red candy melts will give just the right amount of red coloring for these delightful cookies. Our favorite is the Wilton candy melts, you can find these at your local store or here.
-Blue candy melts: You need 1/3 cup blue candy melts to add to our patriotic theme. If you cannot find these at the grocery store try these here.
-Edible gold star sprinkles: For the extra special addition to these cookies you will need some tiny edible gold star sprinkles. Wilton has a fantastic option that we love here.
Step by step how to make 4th of July Cookies
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, set aside. Pick a baking sheet that easily fits in your refrigerator for one of the steps below.
In a small glass bowl, place the red melting chips and microwave on high for 1 minute and 15 seconds. Let it sit for 2 minutes, then gently shake bowl. The chocolate should lose shape and look melted. If not, place it back in the microwave for another 10-20 seconds, stir to test and make sure all the chips have completely melted.
Then, take a Milano cookie and dip one corner in the red chocolate. Place it on the prepared cookie sheet and repeat until all cookies are dipped with red on one side.
Next, gently sprinkle the edible gold stars on top of the red dipped portion. Place in fridge for 5 minutes to cool completely.
Repeat process with the blue chocolate candy melts, melting, then dipping the other corner of the Milano cookie in to coat. Be sure to leave a stripe of white in the middle of the cookie! Sprinkle the blue section with edible gold stars and place back in the fridge until cool. This should only take about 5 minutes.
These cookies can be made 2-3 days ahead, although they do look best made and enjoyed the same day. Store leftovers in an airtight container in a cool location, if there are any left over.
Enjoy!

How do I melt chocolate for cookies?
Melting chocolate in the microwave is easy if you go slowly. It is best to use a glass or ceramic bowl and also chocolate that is not too old, it doesn’t melt well if it’s expired. To melt 1/3 cup of melting chocolate I would begin with 1 minute 15 seconds in the microwave. After that, let chocolate sit for 2-3 minutes. Then, gently stir and see if chocolate begins to melt smooth. If it is still really solid, add 20 seconds in the microwave, then let it sit again. Often chocolate looks like it is not melted when it really is, and you don’t know for sure until you gently stir it. If your chocolate melts but it is too thick to work with, try adding 1/4 teaspoon of coconut oil or shortening, then letting it melt and stirring it in.
Where do I buy melting chocolate and edible gold stars?
I bought both the red and blue melting chocolate as well as the edible gold stars at our local Michael’s store. I’ve also seen them at JoAnn’s Fabric store and even in the cake decorating section at Walmart. I have also included links above for these items that you can buy online and have drop shipped directly to you, making this recipe even more simple to make!
