  • cup butter
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • teaspoon baking powder
  • teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • teaspoon ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ cup light brown sugar
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg large
  • cup pumpkin puree
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips divided
  • sea salt flakes/coarse salt for sprinkling optional


  • Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Butter will get foamy and bubble. Cook until butter solids in the bottom of the pan begin to turn deep golden brown. Immediately remove from heat. Set aside.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a 9x9-inch pan with parchment paper.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, spices, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the brown butter and sugars. Add in the egg, pumpkin, and vanilla and stir until well combined.
  • Add the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Fold in the chocolate chips; reserving 3 tablespoons for sprinkling on top.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Smooth with a spatula. Sprinkle remaining chocolate chips on top.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean.
  • Sprinkle sea salt, if desired. Let the bars cool completely before cutting and serving. Enjoy!
