- 2 boxes white cake mix
- 8 egg whites
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 1 ½ cups water
- 3 oz box red Jello
- 3 oz box blue Jello
- 2 cups boiling water
- 1 cup butter softened
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 tablespoons milk

Bake the cake: Preheat your oven according to your cake mix instructions. In a large mixing bowl, combine cake mix, egg whites, oil, and water. Mix until smooth. Spray two 9-inch round pans with cooking spray and divide the batter evenly. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Let cool completely.
Make the frosting: While the cakes cool, beat softened butter until smooth. Add powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk. Beat until light and fluffy.
Trim and poke: Once the cakes are cool, level the tops if needed. Place one layer on a serving plate. Use the handle of a wooden spoon to poke holes across the surface of the cake, going nearly to the bottom.
Prepare the Jello: In separate bowls, dissolve the red and blue Jello powders in 1 cup of boiling water each. Stir well. Use a squeeze bottle or spoon to fill alternate holes with red and blue Jello. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to set.
Layer and repeat: Frost the top of the first layer with a bit of frosting, then place the second layer on top. Repeat the poking and Jello filling process. Chill again for another 30 minutes.
Frost and decorate: Frost the entire cake with the remaining buttercream. Use a piping bag to decorate the edges if desired, then top with patriotic sprinkles.
