Homemade Candy Corn is easy to make and even more delicious than the store-bought version of this favorite Halloween treat!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2/3 cup light corn syrup
  • 5 tablespoons butter cut into smaller pieces
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup powdered milk
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • yellow and orange food coloring

Instructions

  • Combine the sugar, corn syrup and butter in a medium saucepan over low heat. Once the butter is completely melted, increase the heat to medium-high and bring to a boil. Boil the mixture, stirring occasionally until the heat reaches 245 degrees.
  • Remove the mixture from heat and add the vanilla.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the powdered sugar, powdered milk and salt.
  • Pour the syrup mixture into the dry ingredients and stir together until combined and smooth. Leave the dough in the bowl for about 5-7 minutes or until cool enough to touch.
  • Sprinkle some powdered sugar on a sheet of wax paper. Divide the dough into 3 sections of similar size, but try to have one be the smallest, one medium, and one a little bit larger. Place the dough onto the prepared wax paper. Add  a few drops of the orange food coloring to the medium ball of dough and the yellow food coloring to the largest ball of dough. The smallest ball of dough will remain white. Use your hands to knead in the color until the colors are fully incorporated and the dough is smooth.
  • Roll out each ball of dough like a snake - try to make the white the thinnest, the orange a little larger and then the yellow slightly larger. Gently press the three snakes together and then press them slightly down as well. (You can make your candy corn as large or as small as you wish. We made some tiny ones and some really big ones. Just keep in mind that you need to roll out the snakes within about 15 minutes or the dough will start getting stiffer and hard to manage.)
  • Use a pizza cutter to cut out triangles. Let the candy corn set up for 2-3 hours and then store in an airtight container.
