Grilled Honey Mustard Chicken recipe with a simple 4 ingredient sauce that’s incredible! Yields perfectly grilled, tender, juicy chicken with amazing flavor.
I’m always on the hunt for a good grilled chicken recipe and folks, this one is a winner! Oh heavens it is so good; do yourself a favor and make extra so you have plenty of leftovers. The honey mustard sauce is absolutely delicious and so easy to make.
How to Marinate Chicken
Defrost chicken if needed. Pound thin using a meat mallet and slice in half, if desired.
Mix marinade ingredients then transfer to a gallon sized ziplock bag. Close the bag, shake it all up and use your hands to squish it to combine the ingredients. It’s a very scientific process. {Not.}
Set aside about 3 TBSP of the marinade for topping the chicken after it’s grilled.
Add the chicken to the ziplock bag and once again , mix it around. Let the chicken marinate for about 6-8 hours in the fridge. Each time you open the fridge, pick it up and mix the marinade and chicken around again.
How to grill chicken
Grill until juice from chicken runs clear. When it reaches 165º F, it’s done. To know when your chicken reaches the right temperature, your best tool is going to be a meat thermometer. My all-time favorite meat thermometer is the Thermapen. It’s super fast and incredibly durable. Another great meat thermometer is the ThermoPop which is a more basic version that works just as well!

Here’s what you need to make this grilled chicken:
- your favorite dijon mustard- I used half French’s honey mustard and half Inglehoffer Stone Ground Mustard- yum!
- honey
- sour cream (or plain yogurt)
- Worcestershire sauce
- 3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts*, cut into halves or thirds, depending on size
Directions for making Honey Mustard Chicken recipe
- Mix marinade ingredients in a bowl until well combined. Set aside about 1/4 cup of marinade in a small container. (Store this extra marinade until you’re ready to serve the chicken after it’s been cooked.)
- Place chicken pieces in a ziplock freezer bag, then add the marinade. Seal bag and shake/ massage contents until chicken is well coated.
- Store in the refrigerator for at least 4-5 hours, preferably overnight, flipping the bag over periodically.
- Preheat grill. Cook chicken on grill for about 5-6 minutes on each side. (This time will vary depending on how big your pieces of chicken are. It might take less time- or more time!) Remove chicken from grill when meat thermometer reads 160 degrees F.
- Drizzle remaining marinade on top of grilled chicken prior to serving. Enjoy!
