Ingredients for a Bloody Shirley Temple
Sprite: This is the lemon-lime soda base needed for the drink, this is what gives us that fizzy taste we want. Depending on how many drinks you are serving, you may need one or a few 2 liter bottles.
Ice: You will need ice for your cups to keep the drinks nice and chilled. This will make each drink much more refreshing.
Grenadine: You will need a bottle of grenadine for this creepy drink recipe. This is a traditional ingredient in Shirley Temple drinks and is a pomegranate flavored syrup that is non-alcoholic and used often in bartending so you may find it in your grocery store’s alcohol section. It is also what makes the drink appear “bloody” in this spooky recipe.
Syringes: While this ingredient isn’t edible, you need some plastic syringes to complete this drink’s overall appearance. You can buy them in bulk off of Amazon for fairly cheap, see link here. These are worth the minimal cost for the festive addition to these fun drinks!
How to make a Bloody Shirley Temple
Prep
Begin by adding ice to the individual drinking glasses, fill at least half the glasses with ice to ensure the drinks are nice and chilled.
Next, fill each syringe with about 10ml of grenadine. This may be done easier by pouring the grenadine into a deep glass or container and sucking it up with the syringe.
Assemble
Now, proceed to pour the Sprite soda into each glass. The actual amount of soda needed will vary based on the size of your cups, how much ice you used and how many servings you are making. For a few drinks a 2 liter will suffice. For a large party or gathering, grab a couple to a few 2 liters to make sure everyone gets a glass!
After that, place one filled syringe into each drinking glass, letting it float on top.
Serve
Serve each glass and allow the guests to squeeze out and release the grenadine into their drinks as they desire. This is part of the fun of this drink, everyone is sure to enjoy the drink!
Enjoy!

Are Shirley Temple Drinks Alcoholic?
The original recipe for a Shirley Temple was made to be non-alcoholic but since the drink’s creation, some versions have come to include alcohol like vodka, these are usually referred to as a “dirty Shirley Temple.” Our version of the drink does not contain any alcohol because we want it to be a Shirley temple drink for kids.
Why is it called a Shirley Temple?
Back in the 1930s, there was a female child actor by the name of Shirley Temple. She was most famous for doing movies like Curly Top, Bright Eyes, and Heidi. Shirley Temple did at least 16 movies spanning between the 1930s and 1940s. She was an American icon of her time and this drink was made and named after her. Fun fact, she actually didn’t like the drink because she found it to be too sweet.
What is the shelf life of Grenadine?
You can keep an opened bottle of grenadine stored in the fridge for up to 4 to 6 months after it was first opened. This should give you plenty of time to think of great ways to use it up!
Can I Use Ginger Ale Instead of Sprite in this recipe?
Yes, if desired you can swap out the requested sprite and just use ginger ale. Or if you want your drink to be more traditional you can do a 50/50 of ginger ale and sprite.

Amanda,
Not sure where you can legally purchase syringes without a prescription! In our state, that would be a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. Diabetics can get syringes but need those for their insulin-they are not reusable. Certain other prescriptions require them as well but also need a prescription. Do you care to explain to us how to secure these legally? The idea is adorable but just not sure how this can be done…..legally!

Vickie- these aren’t actually syringes- they’re medicine droppers! You can purchase them at pretty much any pharmacy, and even online. 🙂 http://amzn.to/2cf9I1L Trust me, our Shirley Temples are very legal.
